Empire Hotel site to be transformed
31 March 2017
The transformation of the former Empire Hotel site in Hunter Street, Newcastle West is a big step closer with the $29 million project obtaining development approval.
The planned development is a 14-storey, 128-unit residential building with affordable housing, commercial office space and retail at ground floor.
The investment by the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle follows an expression of interest process by the Hunter Development Corporation.
The project will make a substantial contribution to housing supply and the revitalisation of the city centre. It will help to contribute to the resurgence of the west end of Hunter Street, which is already in the midst of a renaissance.
The site is a great location for a mixture of homes, commercial and retail activities, being in close proximity to the harbour, the Marketown shopping complex, and a new light rail stop.
The development will provide off street parking for 136 vehicles as well as bicycle and motorbike parking.
Construction is expected to start in mid to late 2017.
