Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program
The Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program is a free short program offered in Semester 2, 2018 ahead of light rail services beginning in early 2019.
Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program has been developed to equip young people with the safety knowledge and skills they need for living and moving in an environment in which light rail operates while supporting NSW School learning outcomes.
Designed to be flexible, the Program can include an in-school presentation or an excursion to the light rail project site or both.
To assist teachers to ensure the Newcastle Light Rail Program is relevant to their own teaching programs, we have prepared suggested lesson plans aligned with the Australian Curriculum in the areas of PDHPE for primary school and Geography for high school. However, teachers from all disciplines are welcome to use the Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program to support their teaching.
The Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program is especially important for students who live or go to school near the Newcastle city centre – these are the people who will need to understand the new road signs, new road markings, new sounds and new ways to move around when light rail starts early next year.
For more information on how you can incorporate our program using PDHPE in primary school or Geography for high school, see below.
If you would like your school to participate outside of these learning areas, enquire with us about how we can tailor a presentation to your needs while introducing students to light rail safety.
Places are limited so book your place today! Email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 1800 684 490.
Kindergarten to Year 6
The Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program addresses Road Safety subject matter within the Safe Living strand of the NSW Education Standards Authority PDHPE K–6 Syllabus.
We will come to your school and provide an educational presentation and an information pack for students, which includes educational activities and information about road safety. Excursions to the light rail project site, including educational presentation and walking tour, can also be accommodated – contact us for more information.
Year 7 to Year 10
The Newcastle Light Rail Schools Program provides a unique opportunity for students to be involved in an active inquiry outside the classroom. We offer a guided tour of the light rail alignment where students can apply their geographical skills and use geographical tools to suit their learning objectives. We will incorporate light rail safety into this material.
Should your school wish to have an in-school presentation, we can also come to your school and deliver a presentation to suit your needs.
