Signal Box the latest Revitalising Newcastle lease offering

Newcastle’s most exciting new retail offering has just hit the market, with the heritage listed Signal Box in the heart of Market Street Lawn, now available for long-term lease through Expressions of Interest (EOI).
For nearly 80 years the Signal Box played a key role in directing trains in and out of Newcastle Station, but with the revitalisation of the city, the building now has a new opportunity to be repurposed and celebrated.
Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) Chief Executive Michael Cassel said he expected to see a lot of interest from local and national enterprise through the EOI process.
“We are calling for operators that have an excellent retail offering that will enhance and add value to this bespoke heritage space.
“It isn’t often that you open up an opportunity for an operator to lease a beautiful heritage building that is surrounded by luxury landscaping - I really expect the market to be excited by this opportunity,” said Mr Cassel.
The Signal Box is located in the newly created Market Street Lawn public domain, which until December last year, was closed to the public and laden with heavy rail infrastructure.
“Things are changing in Newcastle, and the way the community has responded to events on Market Street Lawn shows us that people are excited by the change, and this EOI will take this new precinct to the next level.”
Towards the end of next year, the Revitalising Newcastle program expects to open a fully landscaped Market Street Lawn, which will provide more than 8,000m2 of exceptional public domain.
“The standards we are working to are above and beyond anything the city has ever seen before – there will be quality paving, seating options that look like artworks, garden beds, and planting of advanced trees to create shade and atmosphere.
“We are also building a really attractive water feature out the front of the Signal Box that will entertain the kids and onlookers during the day and light up at night time to activate the space,” said Mr Cassel.
“The Signal Box EOI and the current Newcastle Station EOI are all part of the Revitalising Newcastle program’s mandate to create an activated city that attracts people into great spaces linked to new transport.
“These are exciting times.”
The Signal Box is being offered for commercial lease by Colliers International, and provides approx. 76m2 ground level internal space and approx. 265m2 of outside space. Expressions of Interest close on 7 December at 4pm.
