Newcastle Station activation opportunity

Hunter Development Corporation is looking for an experienced and visionary operator to undertake the lease and management of Newcastle Station, creating Newcastle’s newest and pre-eminent destination and event precinct.

This exciting opportunity is for a minimum of 18 months from April 2018, and is about testing how the Newcastle community wants to use this iconic space – whether that’s for restaurants, cafes, arts space, retail or another purpose.

Activation opportunities

Activations should include a variety of uses and events to inspire the community about exciting future long-term uses for the station, while ensuring the heritage values of this iconic building are maintained. Hunter Development Corporation is looking for the operator to identify opportunities in keeping with the objectives of the Revitalising Newcastle program. All ideas are welcome and should consider those generated through community feedback – entertainment in a piazza, active art spaces, outdoor cinema events and restaurant/eateries.

Activation of Newcastle Station is about supporting and respecting the city, including the businesses and activities already in place. Newcastle Station presents as an iconic destination that can create a unique experience in the city centre, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

The vision

The spaces

The Newcastle Station site consists of approximately 960 square metres of internal space with up to six separate tenancy areas. It also provides approximately 3,000 square metres of outdoor piazza space across the former platforms, with awnings to provide shade and shelter. The site has all amenities of the former station use, including separate toilet facilities, a fully commercial kitchen area and a ticket office window. The spaces are a variety of sizes and configurations, but most have access to both Scott Street and the exterior piazza, and many have toilet and kitchenette facilities.

Hunter Development Corporation is completing maintenance work to ensure the spaces are usable for future activations, but minor works may be necessary depending on the exact uses proposed.
